Basia continued the tradition that Astrud started, which was: to give Brazil a musical voice. If Carmen began the journey and Bidu took Brazil through different pastures, subsequent generations brought it all back. Jazz and Bossa Nova , as well as Cool and Smooth Jazz, owe a debt of gratitude to Brazil’s music. As Thelonious Monk once spoke of the country’s influence: “Bossa Nova gave New York’s intellectual jazz community what it lacked so far, that is, rhythm, balance and a Latin heat.”
