 It was a movement of total renewal. João Gilberto introduced his own style—though others existed. He gave the tradition a fresh sound. He projected it onto the global stage. It reflected confidence in a modern Brazil. It grew out of the *samba-canção* genre. Jobim composed *samba-canção*, bossa nova, bolero-style songs, and waltzes. Brazilian music has always been influenced by foreign styles. Without Tom Jobim’s genius, it wouldn't have had the same impact. Jobim’s musical sophistication was extraordinary. The composer emerged from obscurity. It opened up ample space for female singers. The instrumental music of bossa nova was magnificent. Jobim never laid down rules regarding soft vocals or specific instruments.
